Theona Councillor is a singer-songwriter and a proud Yamaji woman. She released her first single Sweet Black Man in 1998 and was nominated for Country Artist of the Year at the 2001 Deadly Awards. Theona is a mother and an active community member in her home town of Geraldton. Her most recent album, ‘Cover Me’, reflects her deep love for family, culture, and country music.
Em caught up with Theona via Zoom and they talked about preserving language, song writing, growing up in a regional area and what it means to be “on country”.
